Consulting Radiologists:
Lynn M. Walker, VMD
H. Mark Saunders, VMD, MS
Drs. Saunders is a Boarded Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary
Radiology and has extensive experience in radiographic interpretation.
Dr. Walker also has extensive experience in interpreting small animal
radiographs. Even though their office is in Northern Vermont our digital
radiology system (see below) allows the immediate viewing of our x-ray
images. They are often able to provide us with their expert interpretation
of the images within a few hours of their being taken. In addition they
participate in “real time” during special contrast studies
using contrast dyes to study various body systems.
Digital Radiology
In 2006 the New England Animal Medical Center converted our x-ray system
from conventional film to digital radiology. Similar in concept to a
digital camera, but with much greater detail, the digital system has
significant advantages over conventional film x-rays. As mentioned above,
the electronic images can be reviewed by a veterinary radiologist who
does not have to be present in the building.
Digital x-rays can be electronically enhanced (although the original
image always remains) so that each body system can be viewed using the
ideal contrast and brightness. In turn this allows our veterinary staff
to “see” greater detail in each body part and this yields
more diagnostic information while taking fewer x-ray images than would
be needed with conventional film x-rays. There are also advantages in
storage and retrieval of the x-ray images. Our veterinarians can easily
compare digital x-rays from different dates to better evaluate changes
over time. We can also “burn” a CD of the digital images
so that referring veterinarians can have an exact copy easily reviewed
on their office computer.
Digital radiology represents a major advance in our diagnostic capabilities.
We pride ourselves on providing “state of the art” equipment
for the benefit of our patients. We also are proud of our staffs of caring
technicians and veterinarians who are trained to use this equipment.
