The New England Animal Medical Center consists of three practices including a general practice (Westbridge Veterinary Hospital) with 6 veterinarians, a referral practice with 5 veterinarians (Animal Referral Center), and a busy 24-hour emergency and critical care hospital (Animal Emergency Center) with a staff of 9 veterinarians and 25 technical staff. More than half of the AEC veterinary staff has completed a postgraduate training program. Many staff nurses are certified veterinary technicians including a technician that is a veterinary technician specialist in emergency/critical care.
The internship includes 18 weeks of rotations in internal medicine, surgery and general day practice. The remainder of the internship is spent on emergency receiving and critical care/ICU rotations. The 16,000 sq ft hospital was newly renovated in 2002. The hospital is fully equipped including an on-site clinical laboratory (CBC, chemistry, blood gases, blood typing, coagulation monitoring and microbiology), Eklin digital radiology, ultrasound, ventilator, EKG monitors, blood pressure monitors for direct and indirect blood pressure, pulse oximetry, end-tidal CO2, and oxygen cages. Radiographs are submitted for interpretation by a board certified radiologist. We have rigid and flexible endoscopy equipment, ASIF bone plating, surgical laser and laparoscopy. We also boast an in-house blood bank.
We offer a broad-based training program that includes extensive exposure to internal medicine, surgery, cardiology and radiology. Interns perform surgery under the guidance of senior staff. Emphasis is on clinical training with daily clinic rounds. Weekly intern seminars include didactic lectures, journal club and morbidity-mortality rounds. We currently have residency training programs in emergency/critical care and surgery. Interns are encouraged to attend weekly resident rounds.

The goal of our program is to provide solid clinical training in preparation for either a residency program or private practice. We have a large and varied caseload that provides excellent preparation for residency training as well as a strong background for a career in private practice. We enjoy an excellent relationship with local veterinarians who refer a wide variety of emergency, critical care, surgical and internal medicine cases to us. Our goal is to make this internship rewarding and educational for both the interns and our staff. The schedule is designed so that interns will have time to study and read about their caseload to further their education. The interns are scheduled for a five day work week. There is no clinical responsibility on the two scheduled days off and the schedule includes some weekends off. The interns are, however, required to attend intern rounds and encouraged to attend resident rounds on their days off. The program is arranged so that interns are not on duty by themselves, but are always scheduled with a staff veterinarian. The interns have primary case responsibility for all their patients with oversight by staff NEAMC veterinarians.
The NEAMC is located in Southeastern Massachusetts near Boston, Providence and Cape Cod. There is ample opportunity for recreation.
Interns are required to be licensed in the State of Massachusetts and to obtain liability insurance and a Massachusetts controlled drug license. Benefits include one week of vacation, a budget for professional expenses (including a conference) and 50% of health insurance premiums are included. An interview is highly recommended either in person or on the phone.
