Description of Residency Program:
This 3-year standard track residency-training program at New England Animal Medical Center provides advanced training in small animal emergency and critical care medicine and is designed to qualify the individual for board certification in the specialty. Residents are supervised by 2 full-time ACVECC Diplomates. There are board-certified specialists in internal medicine, surgery, and cardiology on staff. Two radiologists are available for consultation. The resident will participate in clinical rotations and is expected to participate in the clinical teaching of interns, staff and student externs. Residents typically work 4 days a week plus 1 day a week for study. Time will be allotted for elective specialty rotations and preparation of a manuscript for publication.
The Animal Emergency and Critical Care Center (a division of New England Animal Medical Center) is located in southeastern Massachusetts, approximately 30 miles from Boston, Providence and Cape Cod. The hospital was newly renovated in 2002 up to 16,000 sq. ft. and also has a general practice (Westbridge Veterinary Hospital) and a growing referral practice (Animal Referral Center). The hospital is fully equipped including an on-site clinical laboratory (CBC, chemistry, blood gases, blood typing, coagulation monitoring and microbiology), Eklin digital radiology, ultrasound, a Newport Breeze ventilator, EKG monitors, blood pressure monitors for direct and indirect blood pressure, pulse oximetry, end-tidal CO2, and oxygen cages. We also have rigid and flexible endoscopy equipment, ASIF bone plating and a surgical laser. We also boast an in house blood bank. Radiographs are submitted for interpretation by two board certified radiologists.
Our ICU has 39 cages including 6 runs and the ER is adjacent to it allowing for easy movement of patients. The intensive care unit has specialized capabilities including mechanical ventilation, peritoneal dialysis and total parenteral nutrition. Our technical support staff is excellent and includes many certified veterinary technicians including a technician specialist in emergency/critical care (AVECCT).
Didactic training includes twice daily clinic rounds, journal review, board review, ECG rounds and morbidity and mortality rounds. Residents participate in intern and resident seminar presentations. Our residents leave here well trained in emergency surgery as they are allowed to perform a wide variety of procedures on their own once they feel comfortable in doing so. We have an extensive in-house medical library as well as access to a local medical library.
The resident will receive health and liability insurance coverage as well as 2 weeks of vacation annually. A stipend will be provided towards attendance at an annual veterinary continuing education meeting and for other professional expenses. A license to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Massachusetts is required as well as a controlled substance number. Liability insurance is also required. A personal interview is also strongly recommended.
